If you're not already aware, Canada's Fossils have carved out a unique groove for themselves over the last half-decade on labels including Kye, Fag Tapes, Chocolate Monk and their own imprint, Middle James Co. On "Drooling Hercules", core-Fossil David Payne is joined by Daniel Farr and Josh St. Denis on the A and B side respectively. These stripped down manifestations of Fossils provide some of the most interesting sounds I've heard from them thus far. More fried minimalism than total harshness, both sides present a blend of tape loops, synth, guitar, electronics and, most importantly, room sound, creating a sonorous headrush fit for a king. I'm not sure how many I've made so far, the run will be somewhere between 40 and 60 I guess...

Coming in the next couple of weeks are tapes from Detroit's Andrew Coltrane and a split between Melbourne musique concreters Oranj Punjabi and Reunion Sacred Ibis. Both are guaranteed to be rippers, so keep yer eyes peeled.

Cooper of AS warns that the sound level is somewhat low on this cut, particularly on the first part of side one, and also issues a free download of wave and mp3 files for this material, but interestingly I found the sound quite acceptable and, in fact when compared to the wave files, somewhat more enjoyable. The lathe cut seems to have added a kind of low fidelity grit to both sides which seems to enhance the actual pleasure of the music. This is particularly the case with Junk Sick - Cooper and long-time collaborator Tommy Gunja - who have created two messy, crude spirals of home-taped Noise that manage, with the first piece "Space Debris" to maintain a nice experimental feel with analogue synths, effects, tapes and contact microphones that features a lot of water-ish gurgling with spurts of static, underlined with synth humming and oscillating. The track features choppy bits of harsh sound over more rushing, dirtier layers that combine well and keep things moving without spazzing around. A fairly appropriately titled track, actually, invoking the idea of pieces of human-made shit clogging up space. "Black Dust" reminds me more of the kind of cassette improvisations put out by these people before, a rustier and more coagulated sound that gets more active and aggressive with a lot of nice dragging sounds and more intense synth. Both these pieces are great and I look forward to the up-coming "Rising Damp" tape.

The Hasegawa party, for their part, start off with the usual slow building cosmic synth tones that mutate and evolve with more stressed sounding electronics, like something being stretched beyond its limits, and these sounds move together, the slow winding synth and burbling and gurgling electronics, building in intensity but maintaining dignity. Funnily, because of the building tension of "Apocalyptic Birdsong" it seems to be too short, despite being over sixteen minutes in length, but this project always did seem to excel in the spaced-out-jam method, rather than the concise hit. Still, the sound presented here is structured and strong and the download version can bring out details the lathe cut perhaps missed.

Cosmic Coincidence is the moniker under which Hiroshi Hasegawa has recently reformed his essential unit, C.C.C.C. They should need no introduction as one of the best harsh noise groups of all-time. Their late 80’s/early 90’s releases range from industrial to their later trademark psychedelic noise. ‘Apocalyptic Birdsong’ falls into the latter category and takes the sound to its astral conclusion. These are the first new C.C.C.C. studio recordings to be released in more than a decade.

Junk Sick is a duo comprised of two punk shitkickers from Melbourne, Australia. Taking influence from late 80’s/early 90’s Japanese noise, their two tracks here are a lo-fi assault of electronics, analogue synth, tapes and junk.

12” lathe-cut by Peter King, limited to 50 copies. $20 AUD + postage.

Late last year I was lucky enough to catch an ear-blistering set by long-running noise lord Hiroshi Hasegawa at local watering hole The Gasometer. Hasegawa was a member of legendary group C.C.C.C. before adopting the Astro moniker and taking his path of sonic destruction into space. This close to forty-minute long set is one of the best examples of pure Noise I’ve ever had the chance to encounter. The show was no chinstroke seminar either; between the blasts of electronics, you can hear stoked shouts emanating from several members of Melbourne’s noise cognoscenti. 50 copies on sprayed CD-R’s, cover by Mark Groves.

This is the last recording from Newcastle knuckleheads, Brassskulls. Not as industrial and heavy as their previous output, this slab comes closer to the stuff Mitch and Mikey are doing now. Great quality live recording from the Lakes LP launch at Sunshine + Grease on the 26/03/10. The set is mostly made up of newer material. Blownout guitar and pounding drum machinations channeled into downer raga jams. Sprayed tapes, cover by Matt.

Every year the This Is Not Art festival occurs in Newcastle and heaps of bottom feeding hippies trawl in to town to gypsy dance in Civic Park. Every year the shows that happen outside of the festival program are better than the 'official' ones and this is the case this year more than ever.

BARE GRILLZ - New Newcastle band featuring a great guy called Rob and two other guys. I harshed on someone describing them as a "noise band", so they think I hate them. I was more so paying out the uselessness of the descriptor "noise band". Well, apparently they sound like Abe Vigoda.

REUNION SACRED IBIS - I'm going to play tekkers noise and I assume everyone except Mycle and Senger are gonna walk out.

After this Royal Headache, Dead Farmers, Bed Wettin' Bad Boys and some other fella are playing up the road. Should be sick.

My dad played guitar in a punk/blues band in the 80's called The Deadbeats. This is a ripping cover they did of the traditional Black (Is The Colour Of My True Love's Hair) culled from a 1982 live set at Norths Leaugues Club in Newcastle. It's much more Throb than Patty Waters (both of whom recorded ruling versions of the song). He did a punk zine called Zoned in this period, as well as contributing to another called Colostomy. I'm going to photocopy some ish's of these soon if anyone is interested.

One of the best underground labels in Australia for the last coupla years, Magik Crowbar, has just issued a c45 comp of some stuff from the label. Features (amongst others) Occult Blood, Cock Safari, Psychward, Mshing, Unique Oil Free Air and Anal Cum Wolf. Tommy chucked the bootleg from my first show on there too. The recently re-formed Makers Of The Dead Travel Fast and Scattered Order MK1 are coming down to play some select dates in Melbourne this week. If you are not familiar with the M-Squared label for whom both bands recorded/ran, you should acquaint yourself. "This split tape is titled African Goods, a side each of horrid ceremonial gurgling, spitting and scraping from two Australian necrophiliacs (this may not be true). The Royal Vomit side opens with a heavily treated Morricone line (Good, Bad, Ugly) that conveys desolation and destitution (lots of reverb, warping of the notes). It would make a great sample for a sci-fi Western (something a little more elaborate than Back To The Future 3). The remainder of his side introduces harsher feedback tones and looping to less effect. Reunion Sacred Ibis is the elaborate appellation of Mr. Cooper Bowman, who confided his approach: take one Nintendo DS, download one program, and manipulate the range of sounds that said program allows.
